Hello, September

Image from Ali Edwards

Hello, September and welcome back to The Literacy Booth. We took a little time off for the summer and hope you did, too!

Typically, The Literacy Booth treats you to around three posts per week (usually M-W-F) with each post from a different WI literacy coach. We will resume our typical schedule in October - more about that later in September.

Meanwhile, I (Barb) will use September to write about a variety of things that are on my mind.

So, hello! I'm Barb. If I haven't met you yet, I am a literacy consultant at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. I'm lots of other things, too - reader, student, cook, ice cream lover, fun "auntie" Barb, TV watcher, wanderer, friend (to name a few).

I picked the words above - "Hustle less and live a good life more" - because I want to remind each of you to remember to live a good life - a good work life and a good personal life.

It's a new year. Goals are being set; routines are being established. Our shoes and crayons are new; everything seems possible. Make a habit of slowing down, being intentional, taking time away from the hustle to live a good life.

In that spirit, I'll leave you with some of my favorite summer selfies - all times I felt like I was living a good live amidst the hustle. From upper left -
  1. I saw a few shows at American Players Theatre this summer with an assortment of friends, including my fellow literacy consultant, Laura. My favorite was Streetcar Named Desire.
  2. I celebrated the Fourth of July on my BFF's patio beside Green Bay. There were smiling kids, sparklers, grilled meat, and s'mores.
  3. I saw a ridiculous amount of live music this summer - including an adult sibling vacation to Eaux Claires.
  4. I worked this summer. Luckily, my work often involves collaborating with some of my most favorite people. I'll use some blog posts this month to tell you about fun summer work.

Use the comments to introduce yourself. Who are you? What do you do?

  1. Where did the summer go?! Barb, thanks for a nice welcome back and a reminder that there's a fine line between energy and stress. LOVE "Hustle less and live a good life more." I spent the last 15 days before the first week of back-to-school teacher inservices in China and Korea visiting my daughter. She's been in South Korea for a year (and has signed on for another) and is teaching English at a college prep high school. The students attend school year round with short breaks throughout the year and two, two-week breaks in August and in January. Many of the students live on campus. The school day begins at 8:30. They have a break from 6:00-7:30 for dinner and then they are in supervised study sessions until 11:00 at night! WOW! It was an amazing trip, but it is great to be back in the USA!
